Three individuals were confirmed dead, including the assailant, following a shooting in downtown Austin early Sunday morning. Fourteen others sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals, with three reportedly in critical condition. The incident, which occurred on West Sixth Street, is currently under investigation by the FBI as a potential act of terrorism, according to Acting Special Agent in Charge Alex Doran.
The shooter, who is among those deceased, was neutralized by officers from the Austin Police Department who responded to the scene. The event unfolded at Buford’s, a bar located at the intersection of West Sixth and Rio Grande streets. During a press briefing at 9:30 a.m., Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis detailed how the suspect drove around the area in an SUV before rolling down the windows and opening fire on patrons seated on the patio and those near the bar.
After exiting his vehicle, the suspect continued to shoot at pedestrians along Sixth Street until he was confronted and shot by law enforcement officers. The FBI has indicated that it is premature to ascertain the exact motives behind the shooting. Doran mentioned that there were signs both on the suspect and within his vehicle suggesting a possible link to terrorism.
Emergency services received the first call reporting the shooting at 1:59 a.m., with paramedics and police arriving on scene within approximately 57 seconds, according to Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz. Upon arrival, the male suspect was found armed, prompting three officers to return fire, resulting in his death.
Luckritz noted that a total of 17 individuals were treated at the scene, with three fatalities confirmed, including the shooter. Of the remaining fourteen transported to hospitals, three were critically injured. Mayor Kirk Watson expressed gratitude for the rapid response from public safety officials, asserting that their quick actions likely saved lives.
Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the suspect at this time. Those seeking information about loved ones affected by the incident are urged to contact the Austin Police Department’s victim services unit at 512-974-5037.
Chief Davis extended her condolences to everyone impacted by this tragic event, characterizing it as a deeply saddening occurrence. The Austin Police Department initially reported the situation on social media around 3:46 a.m., confirming that multiple individuals had been injured and that the shooter was deceased, advising the public to steer clear of the area.
