A man was taken into custody on Sunday following a dramatic multi-city police chase involving a U-Haul truck, which allegedly began when he dragged a Hurst police officer with the vehicle. The suspect, identified as Justin Vance Carter, led law enforcement on an hour-long pursuit through various cities in North Texas before his arrest at 12:41 p.m.
Carter now faces several serious charges, including two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, evading arrest, and possession of a controlled substance.
The incident unfolded around 11:30 a.m. when officers responded to reports of a U-Haul being driven erratically in the 700 block of Highway 26. Witnesses claimed that the driver had exited the vehicle and was shouting at passersby.
Upon identifying Carter, who had outstanding warrants, officers attempted to detain him. However, he allegedly fled in the U-Haul, dragging one Hurst officer in the process. Thankfully, another officer was able to pull their colleague to safety just in time.
Subsequently, Carter circled back and drove the truck directly at another officer, who narrowly avoided being hit by jumping behind a barrier.
Hurst police pursued Carter at low speeds for approximately one hour, with assistance from officers in North Richland Hills, Haltom City, and Watauga. He was finally apprehended without further incident.
In addition to the new charges stemming from this incident, Carter faces charges related to his existing warrants. Fortunately, the Hurst Police Department reported that no officers sustained serious injuries during the confrontation. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
