Drivers intending to navigate the Katy Freeway (I-10 East) this weekend should brace themselves for considerable delays due to a major closure currently in effect.
The eastbound lanes of I-10 East are completely shut down from Shepherd Drive to Houston Avenue, presenting a significant obstacle for commuters. Motorists coming from the Katy area will find themselves diverted off the highway much earlier than usual.
Authorities are advising travelers to consider alternate routes and to budget extra time for their journeys, particularly during peak traffic hours. The frontage roads are expected to experience heavy congestion as they take on the overflow of diverted vehicles throughout the weekend.
Local law enforcement and traffic management officials are on-site to assist with directing traffic and managing the flow, aiming to alleviate some of the disruption caused by the closure.
Major I-10 Closures for Houston Avenue Bridge Repairs
This weekend, significant closures are also planned along the I-10 Katy Freeway as crews undertake repairs on the Houston Avenue Bridge.
While repairs are being conducted now, plans are in place for a complete reconstruction of the bridge, which is set for demolition in early 2027. The new structure will be designed to run beneath I-10 as part of the I-10 White Oak Bayou elevation project.
