Zohran Mamdani Takes Oath as NYC's 112th Mayor in Historic Abandoned Subway Station Ceremony

Zohran Mamdani officially took the oath of office as New York City’s 112th mayor at midnight on New Year’s Eve, marking a significant moment in the city’s history.

The ceremony took place in the historic yet abandoned Old City Hall subway station, where New York Attorney General Letitia James administered the oath. At 34 years old, Mamdani becomes the first Muslim mayor of the city and the first of South Asian descent.

In his inaugural speech, Mamdani expressed his gratitude, stating, “This is truly the honor and the privilege of a lifetime.” He emphasized the significance of the old subway station, calling it a “testament to the importance of public transit to the vitality, the health, and the legacy of our city.”

As part of his new administration, Mamdani announced the appointment of Mike Flynn as the commissioner of the Department of Transportation. The public swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Thursday at 1 p.m. at City Hall, where it will be officiated by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. This event will be streamed live, and a block party celebration will precede it, running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Lower Manhattan.

Titled the “Inauguration of a New Era,” the celebration will take place in the renowned “Canyon of Heroes,” a historic location known for its ticker-tape parades honoring various notable figures. The festivities are expected to feature music, performances, and interfaith elements, showcasing Mamdani’s vision for inclusivity.

The inauguration is poised to attract significant media coverage both nationally and internationally. Photographer Amanda Briggs remarked on Mamdani’s charisma, suggesting a palpable energy surrounding his leadership and his ability to connect with diverse New Yorkers.

In preparation for his administration, Mamdani recently appointed five high-ranking officials, including Kamar Samuels as the new city schools chancellor.

Mike Flynn, the newly appointed DOT Commissioner, brings over twenty years of experience in both public and private sectors. He is expected to play a crucial role in advancing Mamdani’s affordability initiatives, which include the proposal for free bus services. “It is an honor to have Mike here alongside me as we embark on an administration that will take seriously the responsibility and the opportunity we have to make this streetscape and the public transit of the city we call home the envy of the world,” Mamdani stated during the ceremony.

Flynn previously served as a vice president at TYLin City Solutions, where he managed teams addressing complex transportation challenges throughout the New York City region. His earlier experience with the New York City Department of Transportation included senior leadership roles focused on capital planning and project initiation.

Expressing his commitment, Flynn stated, “I am honored by the trust Mayor Zohran Mamdani has placed in me to lead the Department of Transportation and work alongside this team to deliver for New Yorkers.” He emphasized the critical role of transportation in enhancing affordability and quality of life.

Experts in transportation have praised Flynn’s appointment. The Regional Plan Association commended Mamdani’s administration for selecting a well-respected leader in city transportation policy. Former DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan noted Flynn’s deep understanding of the city’s transportation landscape, predicting he will be a strong advocate for making the city’s streets safer and more accessible.
