In a significant rescue operation, approximately 80 Chihuahua mixes have been saved from a suspected hoarding situation in Houston. This dramatic intervention unfolded when authorities initially set out to retrieve 20 dogs but were met with a far larger number living in deplorable conditions.
Leaders from PetSet reported that these dogs were discovered living outdoors in unsanitary environments, prompting urgent action. With BARC already facing issues of overcrowding, various animal rescue organizations, including Houston Pets Alive, have stepped in to assist by taking some of the rescued dogs into their care.
The rescued animals are in varying states of health; many are medically fragile and lack proper veterinary care, while some are in good enough condition to be fostered or adopted shortly. Unfortunately, a number of these dogs have had little to no interaction with humans, which poses additional challenges for their rehabilitation.
“Unfortunately, BARC went out to pick up 20 dogs and ended up with 80,” stated Tena Lundquist Faust, co-President of PetSet, highlighting the unexpected scale of the rescue.
Shannon Parker, Executive Director of Houston Pets Alive, emphasized the collaborative effort required to manage such an influx. “It takes a village when you have 80 dogs showing up all at once,” she noted, reflecting the community’s response to the crisis.
Animal advocates are calling on the community to consider fostering or adopting from BARC and local rescue groups. Those who choose to foster will receive all necessary supplies at no cost, and fostering can range from a few days to several weeks. Each adoption or fostering arrangement creates additional space in the shelter, which is crucial for reducing the risk of euthanasia.
The investigation into the hoarding situation is ongoing, with few details released at this time, including whether any individuals will face criminal charges. However, the focus remains on the well-being of the rescued dogs and the urgent need for community support.
