Texas School Districts Under Investigation for Alleged Ties to Terrorist Group

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into two school districts in North Texas concerning their connections to the Islamic Games of North America, which is associated with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). This inquiry follows a significant designation made by Governor Abbott in 2025 that classified CAIR as a foreign terrorist organization, subsequently prohibiting them from entering into state contracts.

The investigation centers around plans for an event at Bridgeland High School in Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (ISD), scheduled for October 2026, which is sponsored by CAIR’s New Jersey chapter. Additionally, the Dallas Islamic Games were slated to take place in May at Colleyville Heritage High School, part of the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD.

Attorney General Paxton has formally requested all communications, contracts, and documents related to these events from both school districts, the Islamic Games of North America, and CAIR or its affiliated organizations.

In a recent statement, Paxton emphasized the need to combat radical Islam in Texas, asserting that any collaboration between school districts and organizations linked to a foreign terrorist organization must cease immediately. “I will ensure that taxpayers’ dollars are not materially supporting activities by Islamist terrorists in violation of Texas law,” he declared.

Governor Abbott has already alerted school officials to the legal implications of hosting such events on public property, citing Texas law that forbids any interaction with designated terrorist organizations.

Reports indicate that at least one of the planned events has been either canceled or postponed. A representative from Grapevine-Colleyville ISD confirmed that negotiations for a facility rental for the 2026 Islamic Games were ongoing but had been paused after the organization sponsoring the games was declared a terrorist entity by the state.

On January 28, 2026, Governor Abbott called for the revocation of CAIR’s nonprofit status, seeking to restrict the organization’s operations within Texas further.
