Houston Weather Update: Potential Severe Storms Expected Sunday Night

HOUSTON – A strong cold front is set to sweep through the area on Sunday night, bringing with it the potential for a line of severe storms accompanied by gusty winds.

This weekend has enjoyed a warm and sunny disposition, creating an inviting atmosphere perfect for outdoor activities such as the rodeo. However, as the day progresses, conditions will shift with the approach of the cold front.

Humidity levels are also expected to rise, resulting in the characteristic sticky air that residents of Houston know all too well.

As the front moves in, there is a low risk of severe storms, rated at 1 out of 5 for Houston, while areas in Walker, Polk, and San Jacinto counties face a slightly elevated risk of 2 out of 5. The primary concerns include damaging wind gusts and brief periods of heavy rainfall.

Once the front passes, a significant drop in temperature will follow, leading to a blustery start to the week ahead.

The National Weather Service has issued several alerts in anticipation of the changing weather conditions. A WIND ADVISORY will remain in effect from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon for Southeast Texas. Additionally, a FIRE WEATHER WATCH has been announced for counties along and west of the I-45 corridor, as well as coastal regions on Monday. A SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY will also be in effect for both bays and Gulf waters through Sunday evening, transitioning to a GALE WATCH into Monday afternoon.

Following the cold front, residents returning to work and school on Monday should prepare for a significant temperature drop, with highs expected to plummet by 25 degrees compared to Sunday. Afternoon temperatures will hover around 60 degrees, with overnight lows dipping into the 30s and 40s. While a freeze is unlikely, layering up will be essential. Fortunately, this cold snap is expected to be brief, with temperatures projected to rise back into the 80s by next Thursday.
