“Heartwarming Tales for Little Kids”

"Heartwarming Tales for Little Kids"

Tipps & Obermiller’s third album, Little Kid Heart, delivers an emotional journey that resonates deeply with listeners. The married duo, comprised of Hilary Tipps and Steve Obermiller, explores the complexities of human emotions through their music.

While listening to the album, I found myself feeling particularly moved by the penultimate track, “So Far from Alone.” It was during a drive that I realized how the blend of sadness, warmth, and humor in their songs created a cathartic experience. By the time I reached the closing track, “This Is Not Enough,” I was nearly overwhelmed with emotion, contemplating pulling over to fully embrace the moment.

Little Kid Heart showcases the couple’s unique folk-infused Americana and roots rock style, providing solace for those facing emotional struggles. Before their marriage, the two were known as local musicians, Hilary and Steve, who first crossed paths in the early 2000s at a singalong in Fort Worth. Tipps had recently returned from a stint in Los Angeles, where she had pursued a singer-songwriter career, while Obermiller was navigating a more conventional life after college.

The couple wed in 2012 and continued to play music with friends until their gatherings dwindled. By 2018, Obermiller felt a resurgence of passion for music, prompting Tipps to encourage him to form a new band, leading to the creation of Uberduber. However, the 2020 pandemic halted their plans, and the band ultimately disbanded following the tragic loss of guitarist Joe Ward to COVID in 2022. Obermiller took this event as a catalyst to revive his musical ambitions.

“I was working in Wichita Falls when Joe died, and I thought, ‘I need to start playing music again,’” Obermiller reflected. This realization led to the duo collaborating once more, resulting in their first album in 2023, followed by a second release a year later, both featuring drummer Trey Ware and local musicians.

In their pursuit of growth as songwriters, Tipps and Obermiller decided to work with a producer for the first time on Little Kid Heart. They spent a year refining their songs, ensuring that sensitive topics were handled with care. Taylor Tatsch, known for his work with Maren Morris, was brought on board to record the album over a six-month period.

Tatsch’s instrumental contributions, alongside the couple’s vocals and acoustic work, added depth to the project. Obermiller praised Tatsch’s meticulous attention to detail, which enhanced their artistic vision.

The tracks on Little Kid Heart reflect the duo’s dedication to crafting meaningful music. Influenced by artists such as the Jayhawks, Sarah McLachlan, and the Indigo Girls, their melodies evoke nostalgia while their lyrics speak to the trials and triumphs of middle age. Songs like “Apartment 303” celebrate shared life experiences, while others like “This Is Not Enough” poignantly address loss and longing.

Though the album is available on streaming platforms, Tipps & Obermiller will officially release Little Kid Heart on CD during a performance at Southside Preservation Hall on Sunday, July 19. Obermiller shared that the early start time aims to accommodate more attendees, supplemented by a food truck for a relaxed atmosphere.

Opening for the show will be Tipps’ friend, fellow singer-songwriter Lisa Renee Smith. Alongside their regular band members, the duo is set to take their music on the road, with performances planned in Colorado following the local release. Balancing their musical pursuits with their professional commitments—Tipps as an anesthesia nurse and Obermiller serving on the board of Southside Preservation Hall—the couple remains dedicated to their craft. “We just love songs!” they affirm, underscoring the passion that fuels their artistry.
