In a demonstration for accountability, supporters of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo held a justice caravan through the streets of Houston on Friday. Salgado Araujo was tragically shot by an ICE agent on July 7, and this event aimed to keep the spotlight on his case, which remains surrounded by significant unanswered questions.
The caravan, which consisted of dozens of vehicles, traveled from Houston’s East End to downtown, culminating in a rally where participants expressed their ongoing demands for transparency amid multiple investigations into the shooting.
Organizers encouraged supporters to join the caravan, specifically urging them to bring white work vans similar to the one Salgado Araujo was driving when he was shot. The intent was to honor his memory while applying pressure on investigators and elected officials for clarity regarding the circumstances of his death.
“We are upset because, again, what happened to Lorenzo Salgado should not have happened at all,” stated one speaker at a news conference prior to the caravan. “It doesn’t matter whether he was an undocumented immigrant or not. It doesn’t matter what was in his truck. It does not matter. Nobody deserves to be executed on the streets of Houston. Not in our city.”
Recent developments in the investigation revealed that ICE agents were originally pursuing two Guatemalan men when they mistakenly attempted to stop Salgado Araujo’s van. Authorities confirmed that he was not a target of the operation. Additionally, the FBI executed a search warrant on the van after observing what appeared to be a white crystal-like substance inside, which an agent suspected to be methamphetamine based on their training, although lab confirmation is still pending.
Governor Greg Abbott has since ordered the Texas Rangers to conduct a separate investigation, supplementing ongoing inquiries by the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
Despite these updates, the organizers’ message remains steadfast. They continue to advocate for an independent investigation into the shooting, the identification of the involved ICE agents, and the release of the three passengers who were present in Salgado Araujo’s van at the time of the incident.
“I want to close by calling on all people of conscience in Houston… to demand an independent investigation into Lorenzo Salgado’s murder,” urged organizer Vivek Venkatraman during the news conference.
Plans for another rally are already underway, set to take place on Sunday at Ervan Chew Park, as the investigations by multiple agencies, including the FBI and the Texas Rangers, continue to unfold.
