Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has opted to abandon plans for additional Islamic foot-washing stations in its international terminal, following a warning from Texas Governor Greg Abbott regarding potential funding repercussions related to “illegal religious discrimination.”
A spokesperson for DFW confirmed that the airport had been evaluating a proposal to introduce new ablution stations but has decided against proceeding after reassessing the situation amid heightened public interest. The airport had intended to install these facilities on the pre-security side of Terminal D, designated for international travel.
Governor Abbott’s intervention came after he announced a review of state grants associated with DFW Airport and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, focusing on allegations of discriminatory practices. Abbott’s statement asserts that the proposed installations would unfairly favor a specific religious group.
Katie Chaumont, the assistant vice president of communications at DFW, noted earlier that the airport has maintained ablution facilities on the post-security side of Terminal D for several years without any issues. She had indicated that an internal proposal was under consideration to extend this service to additional restrooms on the pre-security side.
Abbott’s announcement pointed out concerns that the proposed facilities would “single out one subset of the population for special treatment based on religion,” prompting his review that could impact current and future state funding for the airports.
Previously, two ablution stations were installed in the Interfaith Chapel of Terminal D as part of renovations completed in 2019, which also included enhancements for scripture storage and prayer accommodations.
At this time, it remains unclear whether DFW Airport’s decision will influence its status in Governor Abbott’s ongoing review.
