In a highly anticipated heavyweight bout, Anthony Joshua emerged victorious over Jake Paul, delivering a knockout in the sixth round. The fight took place on Friday night, showcasing Joshua’s prowess as a two-time heavyweight champion.
Joshua demonstrated his elite punching ability by knocking Paul down twice in the fifth round. Sensing an opportunity to finish the fight, he unleashed a powerful right uppercut early in the sixth, followed by a combination that sent Paul to the canvas once more.
Despite getting back to his feet, Paul faced a decisive blow when Joshua landed a right hook, leading to the referee, Christopher Young, counting him out at 1:31 of the round. The event attracted a full house of 19,600 fans at the Kaseya Center.
Before the match, Joshua had expressed a desire for a quick finish, stating that going beyond the first round would be a disappointment. However, after the fight, he praised Paul’s efforts, acknowledging his resilience. “Jake Paul has done really well tonight,” Joshua remarked. “It takes a real man to keep trying in such difficult circumstances.”
This victory positions Joshua to pursue a chance to reclaim the heavyweight title lost to Oleksandr Usyk and potentially set up a long-discussed match with fellow countryman Tyson Fury, who is currently in retirement following two defeats to Usyk.
Joshua’s latest fight marked his return to the ring after a loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024. From the outset against Paul, Joshua established a tactical pace, refraining from heavy engagement early on. He began to leverage his six-inch reach advantage in the second round, effectively using his jab to control the fight.
Weighing in at 243 pounds, Joshua faced 216-pound Paul, who had pivoted from an intended exhibition match against lightweight champion Gervonta Davis to this fight after Davis’s legal issues canceled their event.
Among the spectators were several celebrities, including golf star Rory McIlroy, MLB player Juan Soto, and former NFL players Michael Irvin and Brandon Marshall. In an undercard fight, retired UFC champion Anderson Silva achieved a second-round TKO victory over Tyron Woodley.
In a social media update, President Trump commented on the match, praising Paul for his courage and performance against a larger opponent, further highlighting the entertainment value of the event.
