A 17-year-old has been taken into custody following the tragic shooting death of LePaul Warren, a senior at Westbury High School. This event has sent shockwaves through the local community, igniting discussions about youth violence and safety.
According to the Houston police, the suspect was arrested on Friday evening after surveillance was conducted in a neighborhood on Hillcroft. Authorities confirmed that a weapon was recovered from the teen, who is not enrolled in any Houston Independent School District (HISD) schools. Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz stated that the suspect is currently being processed at the jail.
The shooting incident occurred shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Friday at an off-campus location frequented by students. Reports indicate that an individual emerged from a nearby wooded area, exchanged words with Warren, and subsequently shot him. Campus police and a staff member arrived shortly after and attempted to provide lifesaving measures, but unfortunately, Warren did not survive.
Warren’s family has confirmed his identity, sharing that he was a talented athlete involved in both basketball and football. His uncle, Darwin Prater, expressed profound sorrow, describing him as a good kid who brought joy and love to those around him. “He’s going to be loved everywhere, and he’s going to be missed by everybody,” Prater said.
In response to the shooting, Westbury High School was placed on secure mode while the investigation was underway. However, it was not put on lockdown, as the incident did not occur on school grounds. Officials ensured the safety of students and staff, and crisis counselors were made available on campus on Friday and will return on Monday.
Superintendent Mike Miles expressed his condolences, stating, “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a Westbury High School student. My thoughts are with the student’s family, friends, classmates, teachers, and the entire Westbury community during this incredibly difficult time.” He also noted the district’s commitment to supporting the school community in the days to come.
Due to the incident, all after-school activities, including the homecoming dance, were canceled, and the Westbury High School homecoming game scheduled for Saturday has also been called off.
