A British coroner has classified the 2025 shooting death of 23-year-old Lucy Harrison in Prosper, Texas, as an “unlawful killing.” This conclusion contradicts her father’s assertion that the handgun discharged accidentally during a political argument about President Donald Trump. The case is significant, as it raises questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident and the contrasting legal standards in the U.S. and the U.K.
The tragic event unfolded on January 10, 2025, when Harrison was shot in the chest while visiting her family. Senior Coroner Jacqueline Devonish, presiding over the inquest in Cheshire, provided the family with critical insights into the incident, which ultimately led to the coroner’s ruling.
Harrison had arrived in the U.S. on December 27, 2024, to spend time with her younger siblings and was set to return to the U.K. on the day of her death. Her father, a British-born U.S. citizen, had recently purchased a Glock handgun for personal protection, which was kept in a nightstand.
During the inquest, it was revealed that the firearm discharged while being shown to Harrison. Evidence indicated that a significant political argument occurred between her and her father regarding Trump’s impending inauguration. Family members initially believed Harrison had suffered a medical emergency and only realized she had been shot when emergency responders discovered the bullet wound to her chest. Despite resuscitation efforts, she was pronounced dead at Baylor Medical Center in McKinney shortly after 3:45 p.m.
The coroner’s determination of unlawful killing contrasts sharply with her father’s claim of an accidental discharge. The inquest record indicated that the weapon was aimed at her at chest height when it fired, and the Collin County Medical Examiner confirmed that she died from a gunshot wound to the chest, categorizing her death as a homicide.
The Prosper Police Department cooperated with a cross-border investigation, submitting evidence to the British court. Although the inquest has concluded, the ruling of unlawful killing holds considerable legal implications in the U.K., while any criminal proceedings will be managed by Texas authorities.
Following the investigation, the Prosper Police referred the case to the Collin County District Attorney’s Office for further review. The department stated it would not comment on the matter due to potential ongoing investigations or litigation. As of now, no charges have been filed.
Homicide encompasses various forms of killing, including both criminal and non-criminal acts, and does not automatically imply intent or guilt. Harrison’s mother, Jane Coates, expressed her deep concerns regarding the differences in gun laws between the U.S. and the U.K., highlighting the legal ownership of firearms in Texas compared to the stringent regulations in England.
Coates also criticized the initial investigation conducted by the Prosper Police Department, asserting that it lacked the thoroughness expected in the U.K. She stated, “Lucy deserved better,” emphasizing her frustrations over the handling of the case.
Legal expert Russell Wilson remarked that accidental deaths are assessed individually, and outcomes can vary significantly. He noted that Texas laws differ from those in England, which may influence any potential legal actions stemming from the incident.
Looking ahead, Wilson suggested it is improbable that the U.K. will pursue a criminal case due to the shooting occurring on American soil, but civil actions may be a possibility. Efforts to contact Kirk Harrison for a comment were unsuccessful.
