CapMetro’s bike share service has officially resumed operations following a fire incident that resulted in over $150,000 worth of equipment damage back in May.
The fire incident severely impacted CapMetro’s ability to charge and deploy bikes. Typically, the bike share program operates hundreds of bikes across 75 to 80 stations in Austin, providing a convenient transportation option for residents and visitors alike.
Art Jackson, the vice president of demand response at CapMetro, described the electric bikes as pedal-assisted, which makes them user-friendly and enjoyable for users. He emphasized their role in facilitating first and last-mile connections within the city.
The service had been offline since the fire broke out at the bike share facility located off east Ben White Boulevard. This unfortunate event primarily affected bike batteries and the charging infrastructure, leading to an estimated loss of $159,000 worth of equipment.
Jackson indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the fire was battery-related, although he reiterated the importance of allowing investigators the necessary time to conduct a thorough inquiry.
In response to the incident, CapMetro has had to adapt its charging process. Previously, staff would simply swap out batteries on-site. Now, they must transport the bikes to a designated charging location, leaving the batteries in the bikes during the charging process, which presents a logistical challenge.
Fortunately, the facility itself was insured, and CapMetro is collaborating with their insurance provider to restore the space. For the replacement of the lost equipment, the organization plans to utilize capital funds from their budget, ensuring that the situation, while serious, could have been much worse.
Currently, about 150 electric bikes are back in service, particularly around the University of Texas at Austin campus and downtown. CapMetro aims to expand its fleet from 450 to 500 bikes by the year’s end, enhancing availability for riders.
Users can locate available bikes and stations through CapMetro’s official website or mobile application.
