Officials in the Houston area, along with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), are gearing up for a potential winter freeze and icy road conditions expected this weekend. Preparations are already in motion as an arctic blast is set to lower temperatures significantly.
While the exact timing and locations of icy conditions remain uncertain, the urgency to prepare is clear. The TxDOT plans to begin treating roadways starting Thursday evening to ensure safety for drivers and first responders.
Leslie Briones, Precinct 4 Commissioner, emphasized the importance of readiness, stating, “We are making sure we are cleaning and preparing roads.” With 246 bridges in Precinct 4, preparations are underway to ensure they are ready for the incoming storm.
Walter Hambrick, the Precinct 4 Road and Bridges Director, noted the collaboration with law enforcement and emergency medical services, adding, “We rely on chat rock to increase traction and start the melting process.”
TxDOT’s Danny Perez reiterated the agency’s commitment to road safety, explaining, “We treat these roads to get people to where they need to be. If it’s not safe to be on the roadways, stay off the road.”
Additionally, Briones announced plans to activate warming centers throughout Precinct 4 to assist those in need during the freezing temperatures.
In terms of energy supply, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has assured residents that, based on anticipated weather conditions, they expect to have sufficient generation capacity to meet demand this winter. ERCOT will maintain monitoring throughout the week and encourages Texans to check real-time grid conditions on their website.
ERCOT has made significant improvements to grid reliability since 2021, including enhanced weatherization and inspections of electric generation units and transmission facilities. Their proactive measures also include scheduled maintenance for equipment and better communication with agencies like the Texas Department of Emergency Management.
As the Houston area braces for this winter weather event, officials urge residents to stay informed and prioritize safety on the roads.
