Firefighters from Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a significant blaze at an Oncor electrical substation in the Cedar Crest area early Sunday morning. The incident, which occurred around 12:46 a.m., resulted in a large plume of black smoke rising over the city, yet no power outages were reported.
Upon arrival, firefighting crews encountered a substantial volume of flames and heavy smoke. Initially, the plan was to protect surrounding structures while allowing the fire to extinguish itself. However, with the cooperation of Oncor representatives, the substation was de-energized, enabling firefighters to initiate suppression operations effectively.
Given the nature of the electrical fire, Dallas Fire-Rescue deployed one of its Airport Rescue Firefighting units to apply specialized foam to combat the blaze. A hazardous materials team also joined the response to assess the situation. Additionally, environmental agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, were alerted to monitor any potential environmental impacts from the heavy smoke and suppression activities.
By early morning, firefighters had largely contained the fire, but units remained on-site to cool down debris and ensure safety. Fortunately, Oncor confirmed that no customers experienced power interruptions due to this incident. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
