Deputy and DPS Trooper in Critical Condition Following Officer Involved Shooting in Wood County

A man wanted on multiple felony warrants was shot and killed early Sunday morning during a standoff in Wood County, Texas. The incident left a Wood County deputy and a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper in critical condition after they were shot while attempting to serve the warrants.

The identities of the deceased suspect and the injured officers have not yet been disclosed, as the Texas Rangers have taken the lead in the ongoing investigation.

Details of the Incident

The violent confrontation unfolded after authorities attempted to apprehend the suspect, who was wanted on six felony charges, including unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, theft of a firearm, evading arrest with a vehicle, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance. The incident began Saturday morning near the intersection of FM 515 and FM 2966.

As law enforcement officials moved to execute the warrants, the suspect opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon, striking one deputy multiple times and injuring the DPS trooper. Both officers were transported to a hospital in Tyler, where they remain in critical but stable condition.

After the initial shooting, the suspect barricaded himself inside a home on FM 2966, leading to an hours-long standoff. During this time, law enforcement attempted negotiations and deployed tear gas in an effort to secure a peaceful surrender. However, the suspect continued to fire at officers, complicating the situation.

Eventually, after several unsuccessful attempts to coax the suspect out, tactical teams breached the residence. Upon entry, the suspect allegedly aimed his weapon at the officers again, prompting them to return fire, resulting in his death.
