In response to a perceived failure in the news industry, John Thornton, the founder of the Texas Tribune, invested $1 million of his personal funds in 2008, leading to the establishment of the Tribune in 2009. This initiative not only succeeded but also set a precedent that inspired newsrooms nationwide. Throughout his life, John dedicated himself to replicating this model in various cities through the American Journalism Project.
John remained committed to this vision until his passing in March 2025, just weeks before turning 60. His wife, Erin Thornton, is now continuing his legacy by donating $1 million to enhance the Tribune’s sustainability and foster innovation. A segment of this donation will establish the John Thornton Founding Fund, a reserve designed to ensure the organization’s long-term viability.
“John foresaw the growing need for journalism like this,” Erin remarked. “This is my way of amplifying his vision in the present, a vision he recognized long before most of us.”
Of the total contribution, $500,000 will be allocated in 2027 as a matching fund for donations received during a campaign aimed at energizing the community of supporters who have championed the Tribune since its inception.
John viewed journalism as crucial public infrastructure, essential for a healthy democracy, much like roads and schools. “Local news serves its community directly,” Erin stated. “It must be the cornerstone of a robust democratic system, grounded in the belief that journalism serves the public good.”
With this pledge, Erin is entering her own philanthropic journey while honoring the foundation she and John established together. “I want to take John’s orchard — the values we shared — and cultivate new growth focused on narrative and how storytelling can enrich the human experience,” she expressed.
The designation of the “Founding Fund” is intentional, symbolizing the continuous effort to create an institution that transcends any individual. “While John Thornton was our original founder, the organization will only fulfill his vision if those who follow him embrace their roles as founders, owners, and innovators,” said Tribune CEO Sarah Adler Hartman. “Founding is not a one-time act; for sustainable organizations, it is an ongoing process of reinvention and realization.”
This philosophy underpins the purpose of the recent donation. The matching fund will allow contributions made during the campaign — from both long-time supporters and newcomers — to be matched dollar for dollar, up to $500,000, mirroring the community engagement that initiated the Tribune 17 years ago.
The Tribune plans to officially launch the matching gift campaign later this year. “We are immensely grateful to Erin for this incredibly generous contribution,” Sarah said. “This will enable us to envision a more ambitious future for the Tribune.”
It is noteworthy that Erin Thornton has been a significant financial supporter of the Texas Tribune, and the American Journalism Project has provided financial support in recent years. The Texas Tribune operates as a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization, partially funded by donations from members, foundations, and corporate sponsors, with financial backers having no influence over its journalism.
As the Texas Tribune Festival approaches, scheduled for September 24–26 in downtown Austin, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with over 250 speakers and more than 100 sessions exploring pressing issues such as democracy, education, artificial intelligence, and energy.
