The Republican Party is considering Dallas as a potential venue for a groundbreaking midterm election convention at the American Airlines Center, aiming to enhance voter turnout in Texas.
While no contracts or formal proposals have been finalized, GOP leaders are currently evaluating the rental details for the American Airlines Center, which typically costs around $125,000 per day. The timing and definitive location of the convention remain uncertain, with Las Vegas also being considered as the party weighs the possibility of boosting turnout in Texas.
Representatives from the National Republican Party toured the American Airlines Center in late February, according to Dave Brown, the center’s general manager. However, specifics regarding the event have not been disclosed, and no formal agreements have been established at this point.
Political science professor Matthew Wilson from Southern Methodist University commented on the significance of holding a national convention during a midterm election cycle. He indicated that this move reflects a desire by Republicans to unite their supporters and build momentum for increased voter turnout in the upcoming elections.
Wilson emphasized that hosting the convention in Dallas would demonstrate the party’s serious commitment to Texas races, particularly the highly anticipated U.S. Senate contest. This race will feature Democratic state representative James Talarico against the winner of the Republican runoff, which includes either U.S. Senator John Cornyn or Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Currently, the date of the potential convention is still unknown. Allen West, the chairman of the Dallas Republican Party, stated that he has not been informed about the plans. Additionally, the Dallas Police Department has no information regarding the proposed event.
Wilson further noted that national conventions in presidential election years typically provide a temporary boost for the parties involved. The effectiveness of such a convention during a midterm election cycle remains to be seen, but it could set a precedent for future events.
Inquiries have been made to Mayor Eric Johnson’s office for comments, but no response has been received. Sources indicate that Dallas is the sole Texas location being considered, with Las Vegas also mentioned as a possible alternative.
