HOUSTON – An investigation is currently underway following a tragic incident near Houston’s North Loop on Saturday afternoon, during which a carjacking suspect allegedly shot two individuals, resulting in one fatality.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were dispatched to the 11800 block of Tidwell Road at approximately 2:03 p.m. to respond to a report of an aggravated robbery.
According to investigators, the victim was at a nearby gas station when a man approached him with inquiries about his blue Chevrolet Silverado. During their conversation, the suspect reportedly brandished a firearm and proceeded to steal the truck.
Fortunately, the victim utilized a GPS tracking device and mobile application to locate his stolen vehicle. After identifying its whereabouts, he alerted his family and friends.
The victim’s father and a friend managed to find the Silverado near the intersection of Interstate 610 and Airline Drive. A collision ensued between the stolen truck and the vehicles driven by the victim’s father and friend, which ultimately disabled the Silverado.
Following the crash, both a male and female suspect exited the stolen vehicle and fled towards a nearby Chevron gas station.
During the pursuit, the victim’s father, a Hispanic man in his 50s, chased after the suspects. It was during this chase that the male suspect allegedly fired several shots, striking the father multiple times. He was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
A second victim, a friend of the original vehicle owner estimated to be around 24 to 25 years old, was also shot. Authorities confirmed that he sustained a gunshot wound to the lower back but is expected to survive.
Witnesses included a Metro employee who observed the shooting; fortunately, she was unharmed, although a bullet did hit her vehicle.
The two suspects, described as a Black man and a Black woman, fled the scene in another dark-colored pickup truck believed to be linked to them.
Initially, deputies detained several individuals at the scene to ascertain whether they were witnesses or had connections to the incident. Investigators have also gathered surveillance footage and continue to analyze the evidence.
The investigation is being led by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Division.
