Austin is mourning the loss of musician Jon Dee Graham, who passed away on Friday at the age of 67. His remarkable journey in music began when he made the bold decision to leave law school at the University of Texas to pursue his passion. He initially joined the punk band Skunks, where he had the opportunity to open for iconic groups like the Clash and the Ramones.
Following his time with the Skunks, Graham transitioned to support blues vocalist Lou Ann Barton, later becoming a key member of the influential band True Believers alongside Alejandro Escovedo. His career continued to evolve, as he departed from True Believers just before their disbandment in 1987. Graham then collaborated with notable artists such as John Doe and Exene Cervenka from X, Kelly Willis, and Patty Griffin, adding depth to his already impressive repertoire.
However, it was Graham’s solo work that resonated deeply with fans, showcasing his unique talent. Albums like Hooray for the Moon (2002), The Great Battle (2004), and Summerland (1999) are essential listens, while his latest release, Only Dead For a Little While (2023), is considered a true gem.
Laurie Gallardo of KUTX aptly described his artistry, stating, “[His] songs connect to the soul in ways you didn’t think possible.” This sentiment rings true for anyone who experienced Graham’s live performances, particularly during his memorable Wednesday residencies at the Continental Club or any venue he graced with his presence.
