Houston Airports and METRO Gear Up for Icy Weather Preparedness

Houston’s airports and METRO are gearing up for the impending winter storm, with significant impacts expected on travel plans.

On Friday, a substantial number of flights were either canceled or delayed at both George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport, and this trend is anticipated to persist throughout the weekend.

Preparations Underway

Both airports have equipped themselves with de-icing technology. Brian Mason, Deputy Director of Houston’s Office of Emergency Management, stated, “They have equipment on site they are going to treat their roads on Saturday.” Additionally, the airports possess chemicals and pellets specifically designed to treat icy conditions on the runways.

Travel Advice

Travelers are advised to verify their flight status prior to arriving at the airports, as cancellations and delays are likely. Many airlines are permitting passengers to amend their travel plans without incurring extra fees.

For real-time information, travelers can check the wait times at George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport.

METRO Service Changes

METRO has announced that train services will run on their regular weekend schedule on Saturday. However, all other services, including buses, METROLift, and HOV lanes, will cease operations by 9 PM. On Sunday, train frequency will be reduced, with all other services remaining suspended. This pattern is expected to continue into Monday.

Individuals requiring transportation to warming centers are encouraged to contact 311 for assistance.
