A 42-year-old resident of Cypress, Texas, has received a 45-year federal prison sentence after admitting to the sexual exploitation of minors online for over a decade. Patrick Tran was sentenced to 540 months in prison following his guilty pleas to four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of possession of child pornography.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas indicated that Tran’s illicit activities involved enticing 23 children on a video chat platform to undress, which he recorded. He then reportedly used these recordings to blackmail the children into providing more explicit content, threatening to expose them or cause them harm.
The investigation began in October 2020 when a relative raised concerns regarding suspicious communications indicating that Tran had solicited nude photographs from a minor. Subsequent forensic analysis of Tran’s seized electronic devices uncovered approximately 650 videos featuring children, some of whom were under the age of 10, engaged in sexually explicit acts. The FBI’s Houston division led the investigation.
During the sentencing, U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen emphasized the severity of Tran’s actions, which included a substantial restitution order of over $108,000 to one of the victims. After completing his prison term, Tran will face a lifetime of supervised release, which will impose strict limitations on his internet usage and contact with minors. He is also mandated to register as a sex offender.
Victim impact statements presented at the hearing revealed the profound emotional trauma inflicted by Tran. One victim expressed that his actions made her feel like an object of abuse, leading her to contemplate suicide as a means of escape from her anguish.
Currently, Tran remains in custody and will be transferred to a facility operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
