HOUSTON – A significant winter storm is set to impact the region starting late Saturday and continuing into Sunday. As temperatures plummet, residents should be prepared for potentially hazardous conditions.
The National Weather Service has issued various warnings for Southeast Texas, including a Winter Storm Warning for the greater Houston area, an Ice Storm Warning for Polk, San Jacinto, and Walker counties, and a Winter Weather Advisory for coastal regions. Additionally, an Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for all of Southeast Texas.
Current forecasts indicate that the frigid air and highest risk of ice will arrive early Sunday morning and taper off by Sunday afternoon. Temperature models show variability, but a sharp decline is expected late Saturday night, with temperatures hovering around freezing throughout Sunday. Concerns are growing regarding possible ice accumulation, particularly on Sunday morning.
While some light snow may occur around midday, conditions are anticipated to clear later in the day, ushering in colder air. The primary threat remains the combination of moisture and sub-freezing temperatures, which could lead to freezing rain and sleet. Elevated roadways, bridges, and overpasses are especially vulnerable to these conditions, posing significant travel hazards. Major delays and cancellations at airports are also likely.
Ice accumulation of several tenths of an inch could create slick roadways, and there is a risk of local power outages due to the weight of ice on trees and power lines. Even lower accumulations could result in hazardous icy patches.
Wind chills are expected to be dangerously low, potentially dropping into the single digits and teens by Sunday and early Monday. Such extreme cold can lead to hypothermia in a short time and may cause unprotected water pipes to burst.
