Investigation Launched into Leander ISD Police Vetting Procedures

The Leander Independent School District (ISD) police department is currently facing scrutiny from state authorities regarding its vetting procedures for new officers. This investigation was initiated by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) and centers on the department’s background check processes.

In a public video message released on Thursday, the district addressed these concerns, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and cooperation with TCOLE throughout the investigation.

As background, the Leander ISD Police Department is navigating its inaugural year as an independent law enforcement agency and has encountered significant challenges early on. Superintendent Chris Clark noted that the district has received inquiries related to staffing, hiring practices, operational readiness, and adherence to state safety protocols.

During the spring semester, Police Chief Rogers informed the incoming superintendent about a prior inquiry from TCOLE concerning the department’s hiring practices. At that time, the individual whose methods were under review was no longer with the district.

In July, Superintendent Clark reached out to TCOLE to gain further insight into the investigation, which has been ongoing since October 2025. Initial concerns were raised by two former employees of the police department in May. Following this, the district conducted an internal review of its hiring processes, identifying areas for improvement but finding no evidence of unethical or illegal activity.

Leander ISD is currently awaiting additional information in writing from TCOLE, which has indicated that the focus of the investigation is on the department’s vetting procedures.

To enhance their hiring practices, all managers and background investigators within the district are set to complete TCOLE background investigation training this fall. Superintendent Clark reassured families about the safety of students and staff, reaffirming that safety is a fundamental value for Leander ISD. He stated that the district is committed to continuous improvement and will persist in refining its systems and practices to uphold that value.

Leander ISD maintains its dedication to protecting students, supporting staff, and developing a police department that effectively serves its educational institutions. The district has pledged to remain transparent and work collaboratively with TCOLE as the investigation proceeds.

As the investigation is still active, TCOLE has not released further details at this time. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
