AUSTIN, Texas – State Representative James Talarico has emerged victorious in the Texas Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, securing approximately 53% of the votes against Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, who garnered around 46%. The Associated Press declared Talarico the winner early Wednesday morning after a closely contested race.
The competition between Talarico and Crockett intensified as ballots were counted late Tuesday night, with both candidates eagerly anticipating the outcome.
In Dallas County, a judge had extended voting hours until 9 p.m. due to reports of confusion at polling locations, where some voters were turned away. However, just before the extension was set to expire, the Texas Supreme Court intervened, blocking the order and stating that voting should only occur “as permitted.” This decision followed complaints regarding restricted access to certain precincts in Dallas and Williamson counties, leading to significant disruptions for voters.
After the race was decided, Talarico addressed a cheering crowd in Austin, expressing gratitude for the support of his grassroots campaign. He remarked on the unprecedented turnout of first-time voters and the participation of independents and Republicans in the Democratic primary, suggesting a shift in the political landscape of Texas. Talarico confidently declared, “We’re about to take back Texas.”
Crockett, speaking at her watch party in Dallas, voiced her disappointment over the voting issues that she believed disenfranchised voters. She cited numerous reports from constituents about problems at the polls, indicating a systemic failure that impacted her campaign. Crockett concluded her remarks by indicating she would not return to the stage that night, anticipating that the final results would not be available until the following day.
