A petition has been initiated by members of the Jewish community in Houston, seeking an extension of the voting period for the District C runoff election. This request comes in response to the scheduling of voting hours that coincide with the Jewish holiday of Shabbat.
The petition highlights that the current voting window is set for this Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, it asserts that these hours conflict with Shabbat, which begins at sundown on Friday and lasts until nearly 9 p.m. on Saturday. During this time, observant Jewish individuals are prohibited from driving or using electronic devices.
To address this issue, the petitioners are asking for at least an additional five hours of voting on Sunday, allowing all eligible District C voters the opportunity to participate in the election without compromising their religious observances. The petition lists several prominent Houston leaders, including Mayor John Whitmire and Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth, as defendants.
The petitioners have requested an emergency court hearing scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. to consider their plea for extended voting hours. They emphasize that the extended availability would not only benefit those observing Shabbat but would also be open to all voters in District C.
In their petition, they state: “The Shabbat time period at issue here begins at sundown today, May 15, 2026, and will extend through 8:48 p.m. on May 16, 2026. Thus, observant and Orthodox members of the Jewish faith will face the unacceptable choice of breaking the tenets of their faith or losing the opportunity to participate in the election.”
As the special election approaches, voters will determine who will fill the vacant City Council seat in District C, with candidates Joe Panzarella and Nick Hellyar vying for the position.
