Join Thousands for the Thrilling Polar Bear Plunge at Barton Springs Pool!

Thousands of enthusiasts gathered at Barton Springs Pool to participate in the annual Polar Bear Plunge, a cherished tradition that symbolizes the cleansing of the past year and the welcoming of the new one.

The event drew a diverse crowd, including a group of women ranging from their 50s to 80s, who shared their excitement about the plunge. Debra Flanagan, Jeannie Hopper, Rita Hersey, Martha Bauer, Alexa Riley, and a woman named Janis, who preferred to keep her last name private, all met through mahjong and volunteering at a church kitchen. They eagerly attend the Polar Plunge each year.

“I hope that the joy I’m feeling here today encourages everyone to appreciate and care for Barton Springs. It truly is the jewel of our city,” Janis expressed.

The Save Our Springs Alliance, the organization behind the event, echoed this sentiment. Executive Director Bill Bunch emphasized the importance of community involvement in preserving the springs, which remain clear and beautiful but face ongoing threats. “We are experiencing nearly record low flows, so it’s crucial to protect our springs and encourage responsible water use,” he stated.

Among the participants were high school students Clyde Cowan, Max Neale, and Diego Shtraikh, who shared their thoughts on the experience. “I always enjoy it. It’s a great way to start the morning after celebrating New Year’s,” Cowan remarked.

When asked about their resolutions for the new year, Neale mentioned his plans to return to Australia in June and his desire to spend time with friends before leaving. Cowan noted his goal to reduce sugar intake, while Shtraikh shared his ambition to complete a fashion line by the end of the school year.
