Leander Nonprofit Takes Action to Address Flooding and Cleanup After Heavy Rainfall

A local nonprofit organization is mobilizing to address the aftermath of significant flooding caused by heavy rainfall over the weekend. Safe in Austin, a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing animals with disabilities, is facing unprecedented challenges as it works to recover from the flooding that impacted its facilities in Leander, Texas.

Jamie Wallace, the founder of Safe in Austin, described her shock at the extent of the flooding, stating that in her 15 years at the sanctuary, she has never encountered such a situation. The torrential waters engulfed her 10-acre property, flooding the entire barn—a first in her experience.

During the crisis, the staff and volunteers quickly sprang into action to ensure the safety of the 200 animals on-site. Wallace recounted the frantic moments of rescuing animals from the rushing water and repairing fences that were compromised by the flood.

Amid the chaos, a search began for one of the sanctuary’s most vulnerable residents, a special needs goat named Evie. Wallace could be heard in a video reassuring the goat as she guided her to safety through the rising waters.

Ultimately, all animals were accounted for and safe, but the floodwaters devastated half of the property, leaving behind significant debris and rendering much of the feed unusable. This damage presents new obstacles for an organization already facing resource constraints.

Even prior to the flooding, Safe in Austin was grappling with a growing demand for its services amid limited donations. Wallace emphasized the precarious situation the nonprofit was in before the disaster struck, a challenge that has now intensified due to the water damage.

Volunteers dedicated their weekend to clearing ditches and assisting with cleanup, yet much work remains to be done. Wallace expressed gratitude for the community support that has already been shown during this difficult time.

Safe in Austin is organizing another volunteer cleanup day on Tuesday, June 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., inviting community members to participate. The organization is actively seeking further assistance through volunteer labor, monetary donations, and essential supplies such as livestock feed, tools, and fencing materials.
