The national tour of the acclaimed musical ‘Waitress’ is set to grace the stage at the Bass Concert Hall at the University of Texas at Austin for three nights, enriching the event with local talent from Central Texas.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Tony-nominated musical, which will be performed from October 21 to October 23, with tickets available through Texas Performing Arts.
Local Child Takes Center Stage
Five-year-old Aliyah Thigpen will portray the character Lulu, the daughter of Jenna, the show’s central figure. For Aliyah, the expansive Bass Concert Hall feels just right. “It’s like fun because I like to hold all the props,” she shared. “It’s cool to be on stage and have people see me.” In addition to acting, Aliyah enjoys singing and dancing.
The producers of this tour traditionally cast a local child for the role of Lulu. Aliyah’s parents, Donny Thigpen and Peyton Calhoon, both actors themselves, expressed their excitement about her selection. “She played the same role at Zach Theater last year, so she was ready for this opportunity,” Donny mentioned, reflecting on her previous experience.
The news was a delightful surprise for Aliyah. “It feels a little like the Von Trapp on a smaller scale. It’s great because we’ve never pushed her; it’s always been something she wanted to do,” Donny added.
Texas State Graduate Takes on a Major Role
Connor Lewis, a Texas State University alumnus, is another local talent taking the stage, playing Dr. Jim Pomatter, Jenna’s obstetrician and love interest. “It’s amazing to be back here. I’ve missed this place so much,” said Connor, a New Jersey native. He credited his professors for their guidance, particularly in vocal health, which is vital for performing in a rigorous schedule of shows.
Connor also offered advice to aspiring actors: “Trust yourself. At the end of the day, you know what you want. This career can be challenging, with many rejections, but if you can’t imagine doing anything else, then follow that passion,” he encouraged.
About ‘Waitress’
‘Waitress’ features original music and lyrics by Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, along with a book by Jessie Nelson, known for her work on ‘I Am Sam.’ The musical is inspired by the 2007 film written and directed by Adrienne Shelley, telling the heartfelt story of Jenna Hunterson, a waitress and talented pie-maker seeking an escape from her small town and troubled marriage.
