Zilker Park Set to Partially Reopen This Weekend After ACL Fest Delays

Austin’s Zilker Park is set to partially reopen to the public this Saturday, following delays caused by muddy conditions from the recent Austin City Limits Music Festival. The city has announced that the western section of the Great Lawn will be accessible and will remain open throughout the holiday season. Additionally, the volleyball courts will reopen and be available until November 16, with parking provided along Stratford Drive.

As is customary, certain areas of the Great Lawn will remain closed as preparations commence for the annual Trail of Lights event, scheduled to begin in December. Lou Neff Road will also be closed during the setup for this festive occasion.

The park had been closed for routine maintenance and restoration following the festival, originally planned to reopen on October 19. However, the city decided to extend the closure to allow for further work after concerns were raised regarding the condition of the Great Lawn and surrounding areas following the muddy conditions experienced during the festival’s first weekend.

City officials emphasized their commitment to preserving the park, asserting that no permanent damage occurred. Pablo Agustin Boeri, a turfgrass extension specialist at Texas A&M University, noted that the park’s native clay soil has slow infiltration rates, which likely contributed to the accumulation of puddles during the festival.

Boeri highlighted that effective management practices, including aeration, irrigation, and fertilization, are essential for the grass’s recovery both during and after large events. He stated, “The grass can be recovered,” adding that depending on the severity of the damage, soil preparation, leveling, and potentially reseeding may be necessary.

Staff from Austin Parks and Recreation indicated that the timeline for maintenance and restoration varies each year and can be influenced by weather conditions and other factors. In recent weeks, crews have focused on clearing debris, repairing irrigation systems, and promoting turf recovery to ensure the grass can regrow. Rye seed has also been planted in certain areas to aid grass reestablishment.

The expenses related to restoring the park fall under an agreement with C3, the company responsible for producing the Austin City Limits Festival. In 2024, the cost to restore the lawn exceeded $20,000. The financial details for this year’s restoration will be disclosed once the work is finalized.

The city continues to collaborate with C3 to expedite the recovery of the park, with restoration efforts projected to extend over the upcoming weeks.
