The McKinney City Council has unanimously approved plans for a new mosque, following extensive public commentary and years of local debate regarding the development. The decision came after a late-night vote, concluding a contentious discussion that highlighted both opposition and support from the community.
The council voted 7-0 around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, granting approval for the McKinney Islamic Association’s new facility, which will be located at the intersection of Virginia Parkway and Crutcher Crossing. The proposed site will feature a sanctuary, a classroom building, and a gymnasium to cater to the needs of a growing congregation.
During the meeting, numerous residents voiced their opinions, with some expressing concern over potential traffic issues in the area and expressing fears regarding Sharia law. Conversely, supporters of the mosque argued that the opposition stemmed from fear and anti-Muslim sentiment, emphasizing the association’s longstanding presence in the community, which spans nearly three decades.
“Sharia is about practice, not enforcement. Our mosque will be a place of peace, and we respectfully ask for your approval tonight,” one supporter stated during the public comment session. Another resident questioned the appropriateness of the location, stating, “It simply does not make sense to place a large institutional center of that ideology in the middle of a residence that already struggles with traffic, especially when the community is built around churches and Christian households.”
In the aftermath of the meeting, a former mayor took to social media to denounce the hostility aimed at the mosque, underscoring the importance of its members to the local community. His remarks came after he faced disapproval during the public session.
The new mosque will be situated approximately three miles from the association’s current location, with leadership highlighting the necessity of the expansion to accommodate their growing congregation. The approved plans encompass a sanctuary, classroom facilities, and a gymnasium.
