Austin’s renowned Southern fine dining establishment, Olamaie, is set to close its doors on July 19, just shy of two years after it was awarded one of the city’s first Michelin stars.
In a heartfelt announcement shared on social media, the restaurant expressed the difficulty of conveying the emotions associated with its closure, emphasizing the significant impact it has had over the years.
Founder and chef Michael Fojtasek, in an interview with the Austin American-Statesman, highlighted the increasingly challenging financial landscape for restaurants in Austin. He pointed to sluggish summer sales, escalating rent and labor costs, and a declining number of late-night patrons as key factors contributing to the decision.
Fojtasek reflected on his extensive experience working in major culinary markets like Los Angeles and New York, stating, “I’ve been around the block, and I’ve never seen a market that’s this challenging.”
Olamaie first opened its doors in 2014 and earned its Michelin star in 2024, the inaugural year that the Michelin Guide recognized Texas dining. It was among seven Austin restaurants to receive the prestigious accolade, joining the ranks of Barley Swine, Craft Omakase, Hestia, InterStellar BBQ, la Barbecue, and LeRoy and Lewis Barbecue. The restaurant successfully maintained its star in the following year.
Initially, the Michelin recognition led to a surge in patronage, but Fojtasek noted that this boost faded after a few months.
This closure is part of a concerning trend in Austin’s dining scene, with several notable establishments, including Vespaio, Lammes Candies, Yard Bar, and El Naranjo, having recently shuttered. Additionally, Hoover’s Cooking has also downsized its operations.
In its farewell message, Olamaie expressed gratitude to both diners and staff for their unwavering support, inviting the community to visit in its final days “so we can say thanks one last time.”
“Our mission has always been to offer excellence through our warmth,” the restaurant stated. “We’re proud of what we have accomplished.”
