The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has raised concerns this week by announcing that peak demand on the state’s power grid could experience a staggering increase, potentially surpassing four times current levels by 2032. The preliminary forecast predicts a peak load of 367,790 megawatts, a figure that dramatically exceeds the highest recorded demand of 85,508 megawatts, which occurred in August 2023.
ERCOT has indicated that this forecast is still in its early stages and cautioned that actual demand may be lower than these initial projections. During a meeting of the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) on Friday, officials acknowledged the likelihood that the forecast may be overly optimistic. ERCOT plans to submit a revised forecast in the near future, as it collaborates with agencies to better monitor the rapid expansion of energy-demanding projects such as data centers and cryptocurrency mining operations.
Pablo Vegas, President and CEO of ERCOT, stated, “Texas is experiencing exceptional growth and development, which is reshaping how large load demand is identified, verified, and incorporated into long-term planning. As a result of a changing landscape, we believe this forecast to be higher than expected future load growth.”
The forecast was filed with the PUCT on Wednesday in compliance with Senate Bill 6, which was enacted by the Legislature last year. This preliminary data is informed by ERCOT’s economic analysis and information from utilities serving large customers—projects anticipated to exceed 75 megawatts in demand.
During the PUCT meeting on Friday, both ERCOT and PUCT officials concurred on the necessity of collaborating to refine the forecast before it is used for long-term strategic planning. Commissioner Courtney K. Hjaltman emphasized the critical role of ERCOT’s long-term load forecast, stating, “Every decision that we make as commissioners and everybody else makes really depends on the accuracy of the forecast.”
Despite uncertainty surrounding the final figures, the data suggests significant increases in demand on the ERCOT grid, particularly as large data centers and other energy-intensive projects emerge throughout Texas, fueled by the artificial intelligence surge. Projections indicate that Texas could soon become the leading market for data centers in the nation.
Even ERCOT’s more conservative estimates for this summer are expected to exceed the grid’s peak demand record set in 2023. Earlier this month, Vegas informed the House State Affairs Committee that his agency is monitoring requests for grid connections that could demand around 410,000 megawatts of electricity, with 87% attributed to data centers.
However, energy experts and ERCOT officials have been quick to clarify that requests for grid connections do not guarantee actual construction. PUCT Chair Thomas Gleeson remarked, “I think it’s clear we need to engage in the process to find ways to refine this number into something that’s more usable.”
