A 53-year-old man from Central Texas, Brian Keith Fikac, has been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant following an officer-involved shooting incident in Bell County. The confrontation resulted in injuries to both Fikac and a sheriff’s deputy.
The shooting occurred on Friday afternoon when deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a violent domestic disturbance involving an individual experiencing a mental health crisis. The call prompted a swift response to a residence located on Farm-to-Market Road 2268, just east of Holland.
Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the reporting party and attempted to engage with Fikac. During this encounter, Fikac allegedly displayed what appeared to be a rifle, which led deputies to fire their weapons in response. Subsequent investigations confirmed that a rifle was retrieved from the scene.
Fikac suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the shooting and is currently hospitalized under the sheriff’s custody at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, where he is also receiving treatment for unrelated medical issues. Fortunately, no deputies were struck by gunfire; however, one deputy incurred an unspecified injury during the confrontation. This deputy has since been treated and released, with follow-up care planned.
In compliance with departmental policy, three deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues. The Texas Rangers, who concluded their initial on-scene investigation late Saturday night, are now leading an independent inquiry into the events surrounding the shooting. Authorities have provided body-worn camera footage to both the Rangers and the district attorney’s office for further examination.
The Bell County District Attorney’s Office has set Fikac’s bond at $500,000 following the issuance of an arrest warrant by Justice of the Peace Larry Wilkey.
