A tragic shooting incident occurred outside a church in Salt Lake City on Wednesday night, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals and injuries to several others, as confirmed by local authorities and church representatives.
According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, two people have lost their lives, while at least six others sustained injuries, with three of those victims reported to be in critical condition.
The shooting took place in the parking lot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during a memorial service being held inside the building. In a statement, church officials acknowledged the serious nature of the incident, expressing their gratitude for the efforts of first responders and their commitment to cooperating with law enforcement.
Law enforcement has indicated that the suspect or suspects responsible for the shooting are still at large, and details surrounding the events leading up to the tragedy remain unclear.
Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd informed the press that all victims were adults. He emphasized that while the shooting does not appear to have been a religiously motivated attack, it also does not seem to have been entirely random. Further investigations are underway to determine if gang affiliations may be involved.
Mayor Erin Mendenhall expressed her dismay at the incident, stating, “This should never have happened outside a place of worship. This should never have happened outside a celebration of life.”
The FBI has acknowledged the situation through social media, offering assistance to local law enforcement as they continue their investigation.
