A passenger involved in an August police chase that resulted in a Cleburne police officer being shot now faces an attempted capital murder charge. Zora Bliss, 47, has been charged in connection with the incident that unfolded on August 24, where the driver, Jason Stroud, fired at pursuing officers and was subsequently killed by return fire.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Bliss is accused of aiding Stroud, 43, during the chase that began in Cleburne and concluded in Burleson. Stroud was shot and died at the scene, while one Cleburne officer sustained injuries and is currently in recovery.
The incident began at approximately 6:50 p.m. when Cleburne police responded to reports of a person with a firearm in a vehicle. A pursuit ensued, leading officers through Alvarado and ending near a Sam’s Club in Burleson at the intersection of I-35 and Burleson Boulevard. During the confrontation, shots were exchanged, resulting in the serious injury of one officer, who was later transported to a local hospital.
Bliss has remained in custody at the Johnson County Jail since the incident due to prior charges of aggravated assault against a public servant and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Her bond has been set at a substantial $1,550,000.
Cleburne Police Chief Rob Severance expressed his pride in the officers’ bravery during the chaotic situation, particularly highlighting the injured officer’s efforts to protect the community. He noted the ongoing recovery of the officer and commended the diligent work of detectives involved in the investigation.
While the Cleburne Police Department has completed its inquiry into Bliss’ involvement, the Texas Rangers are continuing to investigate the officer-involved shooting, which remains active.
