Garland Animal Services recently conducted a significant rescue operation, seizing 64 cats from a residence in Garland, Texas. This event marks the largest animal seizure in the agency’s history.
The operation was initiated following a tip-off from an out-of-state shelter that had received several cats originating from the same owner. These animals were reported to be in dire condition due to neglect, prompting a thorough investigation by the Garland police.
Initially, the owner claimed to have only 20 cats in her possession. However, upon further investigation, she consented to surrender all 64 cats, which were subsequently removed from the home under a warrant.
Conditions inside the residence were described as “deplorable,” with animal rescuers required to don respirators and protective clothing because of the overwhelming presence of feces and hazardous ammonia levels. Almost all of the rescued cats were found to be suffering from upper respiratory infections and many were severely malnourished. They are currently receiving critical medical attention from veterinarians.
Art Munoz, the Director of Garland Animal Services, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Many of the cats are receiving urgent medical care, and our team is working around the clock to provide the treatment, nutrition, and support they need to begin healing.” He assured the public that updates would be provided as more information becomes available and encouraged citizens to report any instances of animal cruelty they may witness.
“Garland will not stand by while animals suffer. Anyone committing cruelty will face the full force of the law. We are watching, and we will act,” Munoz declared.
As the investigation continues, it remains uncertain whether the owner will face any criminal charges. The Garland police noted that the case is still under investigation, and it will ultimately be up to the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office to decide on potential charges.
