In a significant escalation, Russian forces launched a missile and drone assault on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, early Saturday, resulting in one fatality and injuring 27 others. This attack occurred just a day prior to planned discussions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Explosions reverberated throughout Kyiv for several hours as ballistic missiles and drones targeted the city, commencing in the early hours of the morning and persisting as daylight broke. The Russian Defense Ministry disclosed that the assault was a “massive strike” involving “long-range precision-guided weapons from land, air, and sea,” including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and drones, aimed at energy infrastructure and military industrial sites used by Ukraine.
The Ministry justified the attack as a response to Ukrainian strikes on “civilian objects” within Russia. Earlier that day, it also claimed to have intercepted seven Ukrainian drones over the Krasnodar and Adygeya regions.
In Poland, military authorities temporarily scrambled fighter jets and closed airports in Lublin and Rzeszow near the Ukrainian border during the Russian strikes. However, they confirmed there was no breach of Polish airspace, and operations at the airports were later restored. The reasons behind the heightened alert in Poland remain unclear, especially as the Russian offensive was concentrated on Kyiv, well beyond the border.
President Zelenskyy noted that the assault involved nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles of various types, with the primary targets being energy and civilian infrastructure in Kyiv. He reported widespread outages of electricity and heating in several districts due to the attacks.
The timing of the strike coincided with Zelenskyy’s preparation for his meeting with Trump in Florida, aimed at addressing the nearly four-year conflict. Zelenskyy questioned the lack of a Russian response to global peace proposals, stating, “Russian representatives hold long talks, in reality the ‘Kinzal’ and ‘Shaheds’ speak for them.”
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported significant destruction, including over ten damaged residential buildings, with urgent evacuations underway from the rubble of collapsed structures. Eyewitness accounts highlighted the harrowing experiences of those affected, including a woman who recounted hearing a man’s desperate cries during the attack.
Among the injured were two children, and at least one body was recovered from the wreckage of a damaged building. The head of the Kyiv Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, indicated that the entire center of Kyiv experienced drone attacks, conveying that Russia is intensifying its aggression in the conflict.
Fires erupted in multiple residential buildings across Kyiv, prompting emergency services to respond swiftly. Strikes also impacted industrial and residential sites throughout the wider Kyiv region, with rescue operations ongoing in the Vyshhorod area.
In a show of military strength, the Kremlin released footage of President Putin in military attire receiving updates from senior military officials, suggesting a strategic attempt to increase pressure on Ukraine ahead of the upcoming talks. Russian General Valery Gerasimov reported territorial gains, claiming full control of several locations in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.
While Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on these claims, the Ukrainian General Staff noted ongoing Russian efforts to dislodge their forces from various positions. Putin emphasized that should Kyiv resist peaceful resolutions, Russia would pursue its military objectives through force.
On his journey to the U.S., Zelenskyy indicated plans to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and engage in discussions with European leaders. He expressed a commitment to minimizing unresolved issues during his talks with Trump while maintaining Ukraine’s critical interests.
Zelenskyy underscored the importance of security guarantees for Ukraine, which the U.S. has pledged to provide, echoing NATO’s Article 5 principles. However, there are still key details that need to be addressed. Disputed territories, particularly in Donetsk and around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, remain contentious topics, with Zelenskyy affirming that Ukraine will not concede any territory to Russia under any circumstances. “The most important issue I want to stress today is security guarantees,” he reiterated, emphasizing their critical importance beyond territorial disputes.
