The Dallas Police Department has released body camera footage documenting a violent encounter involving one of its officers during a traffic stop. Officer Ashton Rosebud was hospitalized after being assaulted by a passenger in a vehicle, suffering multiple facial fractures from a sudden punch.
On Sunday, during a routine traffic stop on Mockingbird Lane, Officer Rosebud pulled over a black Jeep Cherokee for operating without its headlights. While the officer was checking the vehicle’s license plate, 27-year-old Jeremy Mays exited the passenger side and approached him. The situation escalated quickly when Mays unexpectedly struck Officer Rosebud in the face.
In response to the attack, Officer Rosebud fired two shots, hitting Mays in the stomach. Both men were subsequently taken to the hospital, where they are expected to recover from their injuries. Officer Rosebud sustained severe facial injuries that required medical attention, including stitches for cuts near his eye.
Chief Daniel Comeaux condemned the assault, stating, “Let me be clear. This is unacceptable. This type of behavior from suspects or individuals being pulled over for traffic is truly unbelievable.”
Prior to the shooting, Mays had encountered other officers who found him walking along the Central Expressway. They attempted to detain him for his safety, but he instead entered the Jeep, which then drove off. Mays’ girlfriend was the driver of the vehicle and later surrendered to authorities, cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Currently, she faces no charges.
Once he is discharged from the hospital, Mays will be charged with aggravated assault on a public servant. Officer Rosebud, who joined the Dallas Police Department in 2018, is now recovering at home and will be placed on administrative leave as the incident is reviewed.
