As Memorial Day weekend approaches, law enforcement agencies across Texas are ramping up patrols on both land and water to enhance safety measures. Game wardens and other officials are particularly focusing on popular waterways in the Austin area, including Lake Austin and Lake Travis, which have been identified as hotspots for boating incidents.
Statistics from the previous year indicate that Travis County led the state in water-related incidents and was tied for fourth in water-related fatalities. Specifically, in 2025, there were a total of 108 water fatalities reported statewide, among which 58 were classified as open water drownings unrelated to boating activities. Additionally, there were 223 boating while intoxicated (BWI) incidents, with a notable increase in such occurrences during the month of May.
Authorities also reported that 89% of alcohol-related incidents resulted in injury or death, with 178 incidents recorded, marking a 2.9% rise from the previous year. Alarmingly, 84% of fatal incidents involved individuals not wearing life jackets. Local data revealed that Lake Austin experienced nine incidents, resulting in four injuries and one fatality, while Lake Travis recorded eight incidents, leading to six injuries and another fatality. Furthermore, 22% of incidents on Austin area lakes were linked to alcohol consumption.
Texas Game Warden Jacob Henderson emphasized the importance of proactive safety measures. He encourages boaters to remain vigilant and avoid complacency, urging them to formulate a safety plan before heading out on the water. “What gets you tied up out here is complacency. Again, our biggest message is to have a plan,” Henderson stated.
For seasoned boaters like James Verch, avoiding reckless behavior on the water is crucial. He pointed out the risks posed by inexperienced boaters who operate vessels while distracted or under the influence. “Honestly, it’s all the guys that are standing up, driving their boats with drinks in their hands. They have no idea what they’re doing,” Verch remarked. To navigate busy waters safely, he plans to boat early in the day before the crowds arrive.
In addition to the heightened safety measures for Memorial Day, Texas law enforcement is preparing for an influx of visitors during the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Authorities are taking steps to ensure that boat rental companies comply with safety regulations, including providing proper instruction and safety equipment to customers. Maggie Berger from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department stressed the importance of these requirements, stating that if a rental company fails to provide necessary information, customers should reconsider their choice.
In Texas, boat rental businesses are mandated to carry liability insurance and must adhere to specific regulations outlined in the Texas Water Safety Act. Before renting out vessels, they are required to instruct customers on safety equipment and operational guidelines, as well as collect signed acknowledgment forms from operators. Violations of these rules can result in immediate enforcement actions, including halting a boat’s voyage if safety standards are not met.
