Southeast Houston Fire: Key Facts About the Company Involved

In Southeast Houston, a significant fire broke out at Mammoth Metal Recycling, prompting investigations into the company’s background and operations.

Public records reveal that Mammoth Metal Recycling, operating under the Houston Land Co., LLC name, was embroiled in a property tax lawsuit initiated in October 2024. This lawsuit involved multiple taxing authorities, including the City of Houston, Houston Independent School District, and Houston Community College, with Harris County later joining the case.

The lawsuit aimed to recover overdue property taxes, along with associated penalties and interest. In May 2025, a Harris County judge issued a default judgment against the company for over $113,000 due to its failure to respond to the lawsuit. This judgment included a foreclosure of tax liens on the property and authorized its sale.

A motion to dismiss was filed the day after the judgment was issued; however, a spokesperson for the City of Houston confirmed that the court has not yet dismissed the case. Efforts to clarify the litigation status and resolve the tax obligations referenced in the lawsuit are ongoing, with inquiries made to Harris County officials and the company.

Additionally, Mammoth Metal Recycling has been mentioned in a federal fraud case from 2023, where prosecutors accused a network of recycling companies, including Mammoth, of fraudulently acquiring over $53 million through Paycheck Protection Program loans and other business financing. These allegations are distinct from the ongoing investigation into the fire.

Investigators are diligently working to uncover the cause of the recent fire at the recycling facility. Inquiries have been made with the Houston Fire Department, Harris County officials, and company representatives regarding the facility’s compliance history, prior inspections, and any enforcement actions prior to the fire.
