A man has received a life sentence for the murder of his girlfriend, Maria Rodriguez, who disappeared in 2018. Erik Fardell Arceneaux was found guilty earlier this month, and despite extensive searches, Rodriguez’s body has never been recovered.
Rodriguez was last seen on June 21, 2018, after dropping her daughter off with a babysitter before heading to work. Investigators revealed that a coworker received troubling text messages from Rodriguez, stating she would be late and later that she was being chased by three men. Her family reported her missing when she failed to arrive at work or pick up her daughter.
Arceneaux, who claimed to be in a relationship with Rodriguez, faced scrutiny from her family regarding the nature of their connection. Her sister expressed surprise at the revelation of Arceneaux as her boyfriend, stating that Rodriguez had never mentioned him before. She noted that he often contacted her, raising further concerns following her disappearance.
Following the investigation, phone records indicated that both Arceneaux and Rodriguez’s phones were near his residence on the day she vanished. Additionally, surveillance footage reportedly captured Arceneaux abandoning Rodriguez’s truck and later seen purchasing a chainsaw and trash bags from Home Depot.
Arceneaux was charged with murder in 2019, but it was not until 2023 that he was arrested in Houston by the U.S. Marshals’ Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force. He was subsequently booked into the Harris County Jail, where his bond was set at $1 million.
Despite the absence of Rodriguez’s remains, the evidence presented during the trial led to a conviction and the imposition of a life sentence for Arceneaux.
