Tragedy struck in Salado, Texas, as two individuals lost their lives in a helicopter crash involving a military aircraft. The incident occurred on August 12, with officials confirming that the helicopter was an AH-64 Apache attack chopper based at Fort Hood.
The Bell County Sheriff’s Office reported that they received a 911 call alerting them to the crash at approximately 1:33 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the wreckage, which had ignited a significant grass fire in the vicinity.
Brig. Gen. Ethan Diven, the acting commanding general, stated, “Our immediate priority is securing the site and supporting the initial response efforts. Our thoughts are with the crew and their families as we await further information.”
In addition to the fatalities, the crash has resulted in a major grass fire, prompting firefighters from Salado Fire and Bell County ESD #1 to work diligently to control the blaze on FM 2843. Authorities are advising drivers to steer clear of the area as they manage the ongoing situation.
