A visit to the Rainforest Cafe can sometimes fall short of expectations.
When my family and I decided to dine at the Rainforest Cafe in Grapevine, Texas, one of only four locations of the famed animal-themed chain in the state, I was filled with nostalgia. I vividly recalled the excitement I felt when the restaurant first opened, captivated by the animatronics, vibrant lights, and immersive sounds. I was eager for my daughter to experience the same wonder.
Despite having a four-year-old in tow, we opted against making reservations. The wait time was a manageable 20 minutes, allowing us to explore the gift shop, which boasted an assortment of themed souvenirs, safari outfits, and personalized items ranging from keychains to coffee mugs. However, the real highlight for my daughter was the crocodile display at the entrance, which she found both enchanting and slightly intimidating.
Once we were seated, our server approached us with a handmade business card featuring a QR code and her name. She promptly explained that if we left her a five-star review online, it would improve her chances of getting better sections in the future. This approach left a less-than-ideal first impression.
We ordered cocktails—my choice was the Rainbow Colada, made with Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum, strawberries, bananas, piña colada mix, and pineapple juice, while my partner opted for the Raspberry Rainfall, featuring Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Island Oasis Raspberry, sweet and sour, pineapple juice, and simple syrup. The kids’ menu was filled with familiar favorites like dino nuggets, pizza, and spaghetti, and my daughter settled on pizza. I decided to try the Jamaican Me Crazy Pepper Steak from their limited-time Rhythm of the Islands menu, while my partner went for fish and chips.
After placing our order, we eagerly awaited our drinks, but the wait stretched on. The restaurant’s ambiance featured intermittent rainstorms and animatronic animals, which only partially distracted us from the delay. Eventually, our cocktails arrived in light-up mugs, and while they were enjoyable, I questioned their alcohol content. The online menu had promised that purchasing a drink meant we could keep the glass, but we opted out when we learned it would incur an additional charge.
With our food order submitted, I took my daughter to explore the fish tanks scattered throughout the restaurant. Unfortunately, most tanks were empty, which didn’t hold her interest for long. Dining with a preschooler can be challenging, especially with the agonizing wait for food, but the simulated night sky with shooting stars was a temporary distraction. However, we ultimately waited nearly 45 minutes for our meals.
When our server finally returned, she assured us that our dishes would be out shortly and attributed the delay to the fact that “everything is made from scratch.” I found this hard to believe, as my own cooking—though not professional—has certainly produced better results. My pepper steak arrived as a soggy mess, resembling rubber, and the promised tricolor peppers, onions, and sweet plantains were undercooked. I managed to fill up on the Jasmine rice, but the real concern was my daughter’s meal.
My daughter has a fondness for pizza, whether it’s gourmet or leftovers, and she was excited when her dish finally arrived. However, after just one bite, she declared herself finished. Given that she had been complaining of hunger, I sampled her pizza and found the crust alarmingly undercooked, the pepperoni waxy, and the cheese flavorless and sparse. My partner felt similarly about his fish and chips, and even the tiger decoration on our table seemed unimpressed.
Once we finished our meal, we quickly paid our bill and left, having spent over an hour and a half in the rainforest waiting for our “five-star review” server. If you decide to visit the Rainforest Cafe, you can expect an experience filled with novelty, mediocre food, and the sentiment of “after a while, crocodile.”
