To commemorate the release of their nostalgic indie record, the band Ten Kilowatt Test Drive will take the stage at The Cicada this Friday.
The local indie rock trio is set to celebrate their latest EP on May 8, marking the debut of their third record within a year and the fourth in their discography. Their initial EP contained four tracks, which were subsequently released in two parts, titled First and Second, just a month apart on Bandcamp. The new EP, titled Hour Angle, comprises six songs and is also available on Bandcamp. The recording was handled by Alex Bhore, a notable figure in the DFW music scene with a rich history spanning two decades, at Elmwood Studios in Dallas, and was mastered by Matthew Barnhart, an expert in vinyl mastering who has worked with numerous prominent indie labels.
Highlighting the impressive production quality, this EP captures a blend of modern analog warmth that enhances the overall sound without falling into cliché vintage tropes. The band consists of guitarist and vocalist Paddy Ferguson, drummer Quincy Holloway, and bassist Ean Parsons, whose collective sound draws from a variety of influences reminiscent of ’90s and early 2000s indie rock—evoking bands like Pavement, Hum, and My Bloody Valentine—delivering a rich tapestry of swirling guitar effects and emotionally resonant melodies.
During a recent conversation, Ferguson and I reflected on how time seems to shift as we age, eventually leading to a discussion typical among middle-aged musicians: guitar effects pedal chains. To create the diverse soundscapes featured in Hour Angle, Ferguson employs an extensive array of over 20 pedals, including an Earthquaker Devices fuzz/overdrive pedal dubbed “Gary.” This intricate sound sculpting results in a captivating listening experience, particularly with the melodic interplay between Ferguson and Parsons, complemented by Holloway’s subtle yet impactful drumming.
The emotional depth of Ten Kilowatt Test Drive’s music is evident in Ferguson’s lyrics, which explore themes of disconnection, whether socially or personally. The atmospheric quality of his lyrics conveys a sense of tragic finality. A particularly striking moment occurs midway through the EP: after the slow build of “C-Hag,” a new, similarly somber guitar motif emerges, evoking the melancholy of a rainy day following a breakup. This transitions unexpectedly into an upbeat section, providing an exhilarating contrast. The EP concludes with “Dry Eyes,” where Ferguson’s voice, accompanied only by his reverberated guitar, expresses a poignant longing for connection.
The upcoming performance at The Cicada, featuring Lazy Comet from San Antonio and the Denton duo Wirewings, serves as both a celebration of the new EP and a bittersweet farewell to Holloway, who will soon relocate to Mexico with his family. His departure will undoubtedly leave a significant gap in the local music scene, given his contributions to various bands, including the beloved Sub Oslo. As a fan of his work, I cherish the memories of numerous shows and the dynamic energy he brought to the stage. His band’s latest record is a testament to his talent, and he will be greatly missed.
