Authorities in Mesquite, Texas, are investigating a significant fire that resulted in the total destruction of two homes, believed to have been ignited by a floating lantern. The incident occurred on the evening of March 5, around 8 p.m., near the intersection of Peachtree and Bruton roads.
The Mesquite Fire Department suspects that the lantern, likely released from the Balch Springs or southeast Dallas area, became caught in a tree as it descended. This entanglement caused the lantern’s fuel cell, typically containing flammable materials, to fall to the ground and ignite a fire that rapidly spread to the nearby residences.
Fire crews arrived on the scene to find both homes engulfed in flames. Although firefighters were successful in containing the fire and preventing further spread, both structures were deemed a total loss. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of the incident.
This event serves as a cautionary tale as the Chinese New Year celebrations draw to a close. Fire officials are warning the public about the dangers posed by floating lanterns and fireworks, which can lead to uncontrollable fires and substantial property damage.
