Fort Worth School Managers to Hold Discussion on Ten Commandments Tonight at 5 PM

Fort Worth school officials will convene this evening to discuss the contentious issue of displaying the Ten Commandments in classrooms across the district. The meeting is scheduled for 5 PM at the Fort Worth ISD District Service Center, located at 7060 Camp Bowie Blvd. Community members are encouraged to participate, with public comments welcomed. Those wishing to speak can register by calling 817-814-1920 before 4 PM today or sign up in person until 5:20 PM.

Mercy Culture, a politically active church known for its conservative stance, plans to attend the meeting. The church has been mobilizing support for the initiative through an online campaign, advocating for the inclusion of biblical teachings in the curriculum of a district that has faced challenges in academic performance.

In a recent post, Mercy Culture’s For Liberty & Justice ministry expressed their support for the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) board of managers, encouraging them to approve seventh and eighth-grade biblical lessons. They also emphasized the importance of displaying the Ten Commandments in classrooms and allowing for prayer and Bible study, in line with Texas state law.

The discussion comes in light of Senate Bill 10, which mandates that all public schools in Texas display donated copies of the Ten Commandments. This law has sparked various legal challenges. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, known for its conservative rulings, has upheld the law, but the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other civil rights organizations plan to appeal this decision to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has previously ruled against such displays in public schools, citing violations of the First Amendment’s establishment clause. Critics argue that these displays can alienate students of different faiths and do not contribute positively to educational outcomes.
