Houston Cyclosporiasis Outbreak: 16 Confirmed Cases Reported

The Houston Health Department has reported a total of 16 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis within the City of Houston. This information comes alongside 18 additional confirmed cases identified by the Harris County Public Health team.

Health officials have clarified that there has not been a noticeable increase in cyclosporiasis cases this year in the Houston-Harris County area compared to previous years. Current investigations have yet to reveal a common source for these cases or any connections to outbreaks occurring elsewhere in the country, although these inquiries will persist throughout the summer.

In their statement, officials emphasized the importance of taking precautions while enjoying fresh produce. They recommend thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables with plain tap water, as well as ensuring proper hand hygiene by washing hands with soap and water prior to eating.

Cyclosporiasis is a gastrointestinal illness caused by the consumption of food or water contaminated with the cyclospora parasite. Symptoms may include watery diarrhea, fatigue, loss of appetite, and stomach cramps. These symptoms can manifest about a week after infection and may persist for weeks or even months if not treated. Historically, cases of cyclosporiasis tend to rise during the summer months.
