In a startling incident that unfolded during a routine sentencing hearing, a seasoned defense attorney in Houston found himself on the receiving end of an unexpected attack from his own client. John Petruzzi, who has dedicated 46 years to defending murder cases, described the confrontation as a first in his lengthy career.
The courtroom drama occurred immediately after 27-year-old Jaquarius Lewis was sentenced to 50 years in prison for a murder committed in April 2024. Although the proceedings were expected to follow a standard protocol, they took a dramatic turn when Lewis struck Petruzzi in the face moments after the sentence was pronounced.
Petruzzi noted that during the hearing in Judge Kelli Johnson’s courtroom, Lewis had entered a guilty plea, with the state recommending a sentence of 50 years, which the judge subsequently confirmed. “At that point, apparently, I was out. My client hit me in the face. People in the courtroom said I fell back in the chair, hit a counter, and apparently fell to the ground,” Petruzzi recounted.
Initially taken aback by the assault, Petruzzi expressed his disbelief, stating, “I was kind of shocked. I’ve done this a long time, and I’ve never had a client hit me before.” Fortunately, the veteran attorney did not sustain any serious injuries from the incident.
In light of the attack, Lewis now faces an additional charge of injury to the elderly, further complicating his legal troubles following the sentencing.
